Annual Enrollment Period: October 15–December 7, 2026

Medicare’s annual Open Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7. Changes made during this period generally take effect January 1, 2027.

What you can change during this period

  • Join, drop or switch Medicare Advantage plans, with or without drug coverage.
  • Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan.
  • Switch from a Medicare Advantage plan back to Original Medicare.
  • If you use Original Medicare, join, drop or switch a standalone Medicare drug plan.

Already in Medicare Advantage after January 1?

If you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs from January 1 through March 31. During that period, you can generally make one change to another Medicare Advantage plan or leave Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare. If you return to Original Medicare, you can also join a standalone Medicare drug plan.

Special Enrollment Periods

You may have another opportunity to change coverage when certain life events occur, such as moving, losing or changing other coverage, becoming eligible for Medicaid, or qualifying for Extra Help. The timing and choices depend on the specific event.
